Cornea and Anterior Fellowship Program

The Cornea and Anterior Segment Fellowship Program at Sreenethra Eye Hospital aims to lay a foundation for postgraduates in ophthalmology to attain world class corneal medical, surgical and research skills by offering a fellowship training and didactic teaching program.

Cornea fellows develop advanced diagnostic and surgical skills by providing care for patients with a wide range of anterior segment disorders , both common and complex. Fellows will:

  • Examine patients in the Cornea and Anterior Segment departments
  • Independantly consult during OPD hours
  • Perform and assist corneal, cataract and refractive surgeries
  • Attend emergency cases
  • Attend lectures and deliver case presentations
  • Perform other relevant tasks

Program Highlights

Each fellow contributes most of their time for patient care in the cornea and anterior segment service located on the first floor of Sreenethra Eye hospital. This facility is fully equipped with examination lanes and state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies, including Sirius Corneal topographer, pachymeter, AS OCT, Dry Eye Diagnostic equipment, etc.

The Operation Rooms in the Second Floor are equipped with Carl Zeiss Microscopes, Alcon Centurion Phaco machine, Schwind Amaris Excimer Laser, etc.

Didactics:

Sreenethra has extensive formal didactics including lectures and journal clubs. There is a weekly Grand Rounds on Saturdays afternoon in the Main Conference Hall. The fellow is expected to present cases during these.

Outpatient Clinics:

The medical management of refractive, corneal and external disorders, cataract assessment, preoperative evaluation and postoperative care of surgical cases are basic to this program. Therefore, the fellows are posted by rotation to various departments of the hospital dealing with outpatients. Cases seen would include infections in advanced states, including perforations, severe dry eye disease diagnosis and ocular surface management, contact lenses for regular refractive errors and advanced corneal disease, keratoconus diagnosis and management, counseling, treatment and follow up of patients with corneal blindness, etc.

Surgery:

Fellows operate in all major and minor anterior segment OTs. The surgical experience of the fellow is derived from the large volume of cases performed by the Cornea department. There is also ample opportunity to practice cataract surgery. The exposure to the entire spectrum of surgeries include

  • Penetrating keratoplasties
  • Lamellar keratoplasties
  • Ocular surface reconstruction
  • Corneal glue application
  • Collagen cross linking
  • Refractive laser procedures
  • PTK
  • Simple and complicated cataracts
  • Phakic IOLs

Refractive Surgery Service:

The cornea fellow actively participates in the Refractive Surgery Service , including preoperative evaluations, surgery and postoperative care.

Casualty Duty Coverage:

Each fellow is required to provide coverage in the Emergency Department by rotation and attend calls at affiliated institutions that we provide Ophthalmology Services too.

Teaching:

Fellows are an important educational resource for postgraduate students and interns. They interact directly with trainees and serve as consultants , both independently and in collaboration with a faculty member , depending on the complexity of the case and the fellows expertise.

Research:

Fellows are expected to participate in the clinical research projects of the faculty of the Cornea and Anterior Segment Services. Fellows are encouraged to undertake and complete research projects for presentation and publication.

Conferences:

The hospital holds an annual conference where the fellows are encouraged to present a topic of interest of their level of expertise.

They also participate in the monthly programs of the Trivandrum Ophthalmic Club, conferences of the Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons and AIOS, where they can discuss interesting cases and present their work.
