Medical retina Advanced course : 6 months
Clinical vitreoretina surgical course : 2years
At Sreenethra Eye Hospital these courses aims to lay a foundation for postgraduates in ophthalmology to attain world class corneal medical, surgical and research skills by offering a fellowship training and didactic teaching program.
Retina fellows develop advanced diagnostic and surgical skills by providing care for patients with a wide range of posterior segment disorders , both common and complex.
Fellows will:
Examine patients in the vitreoretinal clinic
Independantly consult during OPD hours
Perform and assist vitreoretinal surgeries
Attend emergency cases
Attend lectures and deliver case presentations
Perform other relevant tasks

Program Highlights
Medical retina Advanced course Fellowship will provide opportunities for
Mastering the skills of using slit lamp biomicroscopy which includes use of contact and noncontact fundus lenses.
Mastering the skills of using indirect ophthalmoscopy.
Diagnosis of various medical and surgical retina conditions under supervision of retina specialist.
Interpretation of fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), Indocyanine green angiography (ICG), Optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCTA, ultrasonography (USG
Hands on experience in performing FFA, ICG, OCT, and USG
Visiting NICU with retina specialist to screen babies for retinopathy of prematurity.
Hands on experience in performing laser photocoagulation for various posterior segment diseases.
Hands on experience in delivering intravitreal injections for various posterior segment pathologies.
Familiarize with the art of prescribing low visual aids.
Taking part in research and Presentation in conferences
Familiarize with genetic screening and counselling

Diagnosis of uveitis under supervision of uvea specialist.
Interpretation of fundus fluorescein angiography(FFA), Indocyanine green angiography(ICG), Optical coherence tomography(OCT), ultrasonography(USG) and electrodiagnostic modalities.
Hands on experience in performing FFA, ICG, OCT, OCTA, USG
Visiting NICU with retina specialist to screen babies for retinopathy of prematurity.
Hands on experience in performing laser photocoagulation for various posterior segment diseases.
Hands on experience in delivering intravitreal injections for various posterior segment pathologies.
Hands on experience in performing sclera buckling techniques under the supervision of vitreoretinal surgeons.
Hands on experience in performing Pars plana vitrectomies (20G,23G,25G) under the supervision of vitreoretinal surgeons.
Taking part in research activities and presentations in conferences.
Familiarize with the art of prescribing low visual aids.
Familiarize with genetic screening and counseling.
Didactics:
Sreenethra has extensive formal didactics including lectures and journal clubs. There is a weekly Grand Rounds on Saturdays afternoon in the Main Conference Hall. The fellow is expected to present cases during these.
Casualty Duty Coverage:
Each fellow is required to provide coverage in the Emergency Department by rotation and attend calls at affiliated institutions that we provide Ophthalmology Services too.
Teaching:
Fellows are an important educational resource for postgraduate students and interns. They interact directly with trainees and serve as consultants , both independently and in collaboration with a faculty member , depending on the complexity of the case and the fellows expertise.
Research:
Fellows are expected to participate in the clinical research projects of the faculty of the Cornea and Anterior Segment Services. Fellows are encouraged to undertake and complete research projects for presentation and publication.
Conferences:
The hospital holds an annual conference where the fellows are encouraged to present a topic of interest of their level of expertise.
They also participate in the monthly programs of the Trivandrum Ophthalmic Club, conferences of the Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons and AIOS, where they can discuss interesting cases and present their work.
