Cornea and refractive services

REFRACTIVE SURGERY

Refractive surgeries are advanced technology with which different types refractive errors myopia(shortsightedness), Hyperopia(longsightedness), Astigmatism(cylinder power) presbyopia and combinations are treated surgically ensuring freedom from glasses.

TransPRK

In this treatment method by the German made Schwind Amaris Laser machine, the eye is not touched by any instrument. It is safe and gentle to the eye.
It combines the advantages of SCHWIND’s proven TransPRK surface ablation method and revolutionary SmartPulse technology. The result is clear vision without compromise.
Unlike with previous methods, the eye is not touched with any instrument. Instead, the SCHWIND AMARIS laser corrects vision through the top layers of the cornea, without suction, flap, or incision, and without the use of alcohol. SmartSurfACE is non-invasive, safe, gentle, and stress-free for the patient.

Touchless laser interaction with the eye
Single step treatment lasting seconds
Fast treatment undeterred by environmental influence on the laser
Rapid healing and regeneration of epithelium
No toxic chemicals used
High long term corneal stability
Lesser chances of dry eye

SmartSurfACE is suitable for all laser candidates wishing to see clearly. It is ideal for active and athletic people, and for professions where sharp vision is needed. There are no issues of flap injury or instability following the procedure unlike conventional lasik in sportspersons or those involved in combat.
Unlike standard PRK, its it has no manual component, is free of toxic methods of epithelium removal, is a faster procedure, and restores vision and comfort speedily.
Unlike the femtosecond laser, it provides the same benefit to thin corneae in a much more economical way.
Added to this premium laser conforming to international standards is the full and free information from our counsellors, impeccable treatment from our corneal specialist with surgical expertise spanning decades and the gentle understanding and care from our support staff, in the comfort of our fully equipped state of the art hospital premises.

PHAKIC INTRAOCULAR LENSES
Phakic IOL implants helps correction of high refractive errors(-8 to -30 D of myopia, uptp + 10 D of hyperopia and unto 6 D of astigmatism. It can also corrects corneas which are unsuitable for Lasik like thin corneas and stable mild keratoconus. This involves implantation of a thin highly biocompatible intraocular lens in the posterior chamber which is the space between iris and crystalline lens of the eye which in turn corrects the refractive error.

Cornea
CORNEAL ULCER
Infection of the black of the eye(cornea) by microbes(bacteria ,fungi or parasites ) or by virus ,which is usually associated with trauma, dry eye, contact lens use and over use medications like steroid eye drops. It is treated using antibiotic eye drops and therapeutic keratoplasty in advanced cases.

CORNEAL DYSTROPHIES AND DEGENERATIONS
Corneal dystrophies are a group of inherited disorders in which different layers of the cornea are opacified(epithelial, stromal, endothelial). Treated with artificial tears, therapeutic soft contact lenses, phototherapeutic keratectomy, lamellar and penetrating keratoplasty Corneal degenerations are age related changes like change in corneal shape and various types of deposits and inflammatory changes in the cornea(arcus senelis, amyloid degeneration, spheroidal degeneration, lipid degeneration, terrions marginal degeneration). Most of them don’t need treatment. Phototherapetic keratectomy, lamellar or penetrateing keratoplasty may be needed in advanced cases).

KERATOCONUS
Keratoconus is a progressive non inflammatory disorder of the cornea which leads to thinning and bulging of the central cornea causing vision loss. Usually starts in teenagers and may progress unto 45 years. Eye rubbing and positive family history have more chances of developing keratoconus. Treatment with glasses, specialised contact lenses, intracorneal ring implants, lamellar and full thickness keratoplasty according to the severity of the disease will improve vision. Corneal collagen cross linking (C3R/CXL) is currently available effective treatment to arrest the progression of the disease.

A spectrum of corneal investigative modalities including corneal topography,CRS master, Specular microscopy, ocular coherence tomography and corneal pachymetry are available for precise assessment and diagnosis of corneal disorders. Management of all corneal disorders medical(fortified antibiotics, autologous serum eye drops) and surgical(corneal tattooing, amniotic membrane grafting, pentetrating keratoplasty, Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty(DALK), Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty(DSEK), descemets membrane endothelial keratoplasty(DMEK),corneal keratoprosthesis) modalities along with a well prepared and qualified team is available.
